As I sit at the infamous CoffeeBar in the heart of Squaw Valley, I can’t help but sip my two-for-one mimosas, eating my oatmeal bowl, thinking about exactly why this place is so magical and why I’ve been here 5 times over the course of 2 years. Lake Tahoe is one of those sought out destinations that people try to check off their bucket list, but I don’t think the true realism of what this place has to offer is apparent. Lake Tahoe is beautiful, Lake Tahoe is magical, Lake Tahoe is everything.
If you’re wondering what the hype is about and why you should visit Lake Tahoe more than once, take a look below.
One of the most beautiful mountains you will ever ski on. Jamie, my boyfriend, has been skiing since he was 8. He’s skied in New England, he’s skied in Sweden and still nothing compares to the experience he has when he skies in Tahoe. Specifically Squaw Valley, which is Northern Tahoe. So if you’re wondering what the difference is between South Lake Tahoe and North Lake Tahoe, it just depends on what you’re looking for.
South Lake is the laid back, chill beginner-intermediate ski-town for someone who spends a few hours on the mountain and then heads back to the lodge for happy hour followed by a game of beer pong at the Airbnb. This person typically enjoys atmospheres, restaurants, casinos and ice-skating. It’s the perfect place to enjoy an adventure but relax and wind-down rather quickly.
North Lake is a tad bit bougier and more heavily focused on skiing and winter sports. Squaw Valley is an extremely exclusive resort that we only had the pleasure in staying in because of my company and their generosity. BUT the mountains and ski-runs are out of this world. The 1960 Olympics were held at Squaw and it’s obvious why. The mountains and snow-fall are insane, the village is quaint, beautiful and very expensive, but so worth the experience. The vibes are still chill here at the same time because as I’m writing this post, a dog keeps sticking his head in the doorway, trying to sneak in to hangout inside, while the entire staff laughs and knows the dog by name, telling him he has to wait outside. It’s entertaining to watch mostly because no one is really too concerned that he keeps trying to come in.
The Dynamic Between Seasons
Wow, 2 worlds apart. Skiing and ice-skating outside in the winter, swimming and kayaking in the summer. One of the biggest reasons I love Tahoe so much is because it reminds me of the East Coast a little, specifically Long island, where I’m from. You get these intense seasons and different experiences from both. The Lake is amazing regardless of when you visit. It’s one of the only places in the world that I could stop and stare for hours and be completely satisfied.
I am ALL about this component of places I visit. If the vibe is right, I want to be there, and Tahoe has one of the greatest vibes I’ve ever known. Everyone here is just happy and kind and always smiling. Every restaurant you go to is fun, lively and deliciois. They have great food, interesting and tasty drinks, fun music and detailed decor or furniture to enjoy. I’m not a skier, so I literally come just for this. I’ve sat in this coffee bar for the past 4 hours and no one’s said a thing to me except, can I get you another drink? or how’s your day going? No one’s in a rush and you’re welcome to stay and hang as long as you want
I swear, no other place on earth has this many dogs. I’m constantly seeing dogs everywhere I go. You know how in NYC you can stand from one McDonalds and see another from that location? Well, when I pet a dog in Tahoe, I can see about 3 others waiting for me in the distance. Dogs are allowed just about everywhere here and they are always so beautiful and well-behaved. #IMustPetThePup
As New Yorker, I’m a huge snob when it comes to food, especially my bagels and pizza. Well, in Tahoe, I have both a favorite pizza and bagel place. It’s not even just the bread items, they also have great Mexican food, burgers, brunch, coffee, you name it. I’m never disappointed when it comes to food and beverage here. Favorite places in South Lake include Base Camp Pizza, California burger and Azul. Favorite places in North Lake include Mountain Nectar Juice & Bagels, CoffeeBar and The Auld Dubliner.
Overall, I just love how I feel when I’m here. You know those times, people, and places that make you feel a certain way and you can’t really explain fully why you feel so great? Well Lake Tahoe is just that. I love everything about this place and if I could, I’d live here for a year or longer. I’m so happy to have discovered a favorite place to add to my list. Avid travelers tend to avoid visiting the same location twice, but I promise you’ll want to be here more than once. Lake Tahoe will just never get old and I will never get tired of coming here.
If visiting Lake Tahoe isn’t on your bucket list, add it.
